The Barrett family is really grateful and in debt to our parents to have had the foresight to preserve our formulative years through photographs. These photos were taken indoors and outdoors.

I just regret that no photo whatsoever exists of our house from the outside. Unfortunately, it has been torn down.

Through the course of my moving from one home to another, I have lost precious pictures that I took. I had pictures of my siblings playing in the snow in front of our house. I also took pictures of Christmas 1967 - 47 years ago. Those memories are gone forever.

You will find links to vintage photos I have discovered on the web on this page. These photos are street scenes of Jersey City of the 1950s and 1960s.

Ocean Avenue & Cator Avenue. This street scene of Ocean Avenue at the intersection of Cator Avenue was taken in 1950. I remember my father traveling down Ocean Avenue many times during the course of his job working for General Laboratories.

Ocean Avenue & New Street. Photo circa 1950;

Journal Square. This vintage photo was taken around 1940. Journal Square during the '50s and '60s was bustling with shoppers and commuters. The Stanley, State, and Loews theaters were in full operation. I had a part time job at a dental laboratory on Hudson Boulevard (now Kennedy Boulevard).

Baldwin Avenue & State Hwy 139 . Photo circa 1950.

Route 440. Photo circa 1951.

Viaduct for westbound traffic. You reach this viaduct after exiting the Holland Tunnel (1953). I saw this scene many times after one of our many trips to my Aunt Margaret's house in Brooklyn, NY. These trips were primarily in the mid to late 1960s.

Montgomery Street facing west towards Brunswick Street. Photo circa 1950.

Pulaski Skyway. I have ridden the Pulaski Skyway many times in the course of my father's job. (Photo undated).
